William Shakespeare once said, “The object of art is to give life a shape.” Though renowned for his use of beautiful language, turning words into art, Shakespeare’s work may also be examined by visual means. While a sonnet may be brilliantly scripted and aurally enchanting, a picture may actually be “worth a thousand words”. While language and design are incomparable arts, the two may be mapped in order to portray each other. Each word is an image each sentence a story. With a passion for both art and literature, I’ve chosen a depiction of Shakespeare for my senior degree project. Sonnet 30 demonstrates the power of an image as representation for oral and written tradition.
